Copilot Plus, on the other hand, performs a significant portion of the processing locally on the device, reducing latency and improving privacy for sensitive data. This architectural shift is made possible by the new generation of Windows AI PCs, which feature powerful NPUs capable of running large language models locally.

Hardware Requirements: What You Need

Copilot Plus is exclusively available on Windows AI PCs that meet specific hardware criteria. These devices must include a Snapdragon X Elite, Intel Core Ultra (with Intel AI Boost NPU), or AMD Ryzen 7040 series processor with an integrated NPU capable of at least 40 TOPS (trillion operations per second). Additionally, they require at least 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Microsoft has marketed these as the first wave of Copilot Plus PCs, with more models expected from OEMs like Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and Asus.

Standard Copilot, in contrast, has much lower hardware demands. It works on any Windows 10 or 11 PC with an internet connection, and even on mobile devices via the Edge browser or the standalone Copilot app. There is no need for a dedicated NPU or high-end specifications. This makes standard Copilot accessible to a much wider audience, including users with older hardware or budget devices.

The hardware disparity is a conscious design choice. Microsoft aims to position Copilot Plus as a premium feature that incentivizes users to upgrade to new AI PCs, while maintaining Copilot as a universal assistant for the billions of existing Windows users. This strategy mirrors the company’s approach with other features like Windows Hello, which required specialized cameras for facial recognition.

Key Features Exclusive to Copilot Plus

Several groundbreaking features are exclusive to Copilot Plus, exploiting local NPU power. The most prominent is Recall, a time-machine-like feature that allows users to search through their past activities on the PC using natural language. Recall snapshots the screen every few seconds and stores encrypted snapshots locally, enabling users to find a document they viewed last week or a chat they had months ago. This feature relies on the NPU for continuous image analysis without draining battery life.

Another Copilot Plus exclusive is Cocreator, an AI image generation tool integrated directly into the operating system. Unlike standard Copilot’s DALL-E integration, Cocreator runs locally, generating images based on text prompts without sending data to the cloud. This not only speeds up generation but also addresses privacy concerns for users who work with sensitive content. The NPU ensures that image generation does not bog down the CPU or GPU, leaving them free for other tasks.

For example, users can ask Copilot to book a restaurant via OpenTable or play music from Spotify, all within the chat interface. The cloud-based nature means these capabilities work on any device, including non-Windows platforms.

Moreover, standard Copilot is continuously updated on the server side, meaning users get new features and model improvements without waiting for system updates. Microsoft recently integrated GPT-4 Turbo and GPT-4o, providing faster and more accurate responses. Users can choose between different conversation styles: Creative, Balanced, and Precise, to tailor responses to their needs.

Performance and Latency Comparisons

One of the most noticeable differences between Copilot and Copilot Plus is response speed. Standard Copilot incurs network latency, which can range from a few seconds to tens of seconds depending on internet speed and server load. In contrast, Copilot Plus responses for local features like Recall and Cocreator are nearly instantaneous. For tasks that require cloud assistance, Copilot Plus can still fall back to the cloud, but the local NPU handles the initial processing.

Battery life is another consideration. Local NPU processing is more power-efficient than sending data to the cloud because it avoids the energy cost of wireless communication. Early reviews of Copilot Plus devices indicate that using features like Windows Studio Effects does not significantly reduce battery life compared to similar tasks on non-NPU devices. However, heavy use of cloud-based Copilot can drain battery faster due to constant network activity.

For standard PCs, using Copilot may lead to increased power consumption when the network radio is active, but for desktop users plugged into power, this is less relevant. Microsoft is working to optimize cloud latency through edge computing and improved server infrastructure, but local NPU will always have an advantage for real-time tasks.

Privacy and Data Handling

Privacy is a key selling point for Copilot Plus. Since many features run entirely on the device, sensitive data like locally generated images or snapshots for Recall never leave the PC. Microsoft has emphasized that Recall data is encrypted and stored only on the device, and users have control over what is captured and for how long. This addresses concerns about cloud AI services storing and analyzing personal information.

Standard Copilot, being cloud-dependent, necessarily sends user queries and data to Microsoft servers. While Microsoft states that they do not use customer data to train models in the enterprise context (for tenants with paid subscriptions), consumer interactions may be used to improve the service. Privacy-conscious users may prefer Copilot Plus for tasks involving proprietary or personal information, although for general queries, standard Copilot remains functional.

Microsoft has also introduced Recall with privacy features: users can exclude specific apps or websites from being snapshotted, delete individual snapshots, or pause the feature entirely. The snapshots are stored in a dedicated encrypted container and are not accessible to third-party apps. This level of granularity is not available with cloud-based AI assistants.

Availability and Pricing

Standard Copilot is free for all Windows users, with optional Copilot Pro subscription ($20/month) that provides priority access to GPT-4 Turbo, faster performance, and integration with Microsoft 365. Copilot for Microsoft 365 (formerly Microsoft 365 Copilot) is priced at $30/user/month for commercial users.

Copilot Plus does not have an additional subscription cost beyond the hardware purchase. All Copilot Plus features (Recall, Cocreator, Live Captions, Studio Effects) are included with the Windows 11 operating system on eligible devices. However, the devices themselves are currently more expensive than standard laptops, starting around $1,000 for entry-level models. As more OEMs release Copilot Plus PCs, prices are expected to decrease.

Microsoft is also working to bring some Copilot Plus features to existing devices through software updates when possible. For example, Live Captions with translation may eventually be available on devices with compatible NPUs, not just the premium tier. Cocreator and Recall, however, require the full NPU capabilities of the new AI PCs.

Which One Should You Choose?

If you already own a modern Windows PC, standard Copilot is more than sufficient for daily productivity. It can help draft emails, summarize documents, answer questions, and control settings. The cloud connectivity ensures it has the latest knowledge and capabilities. For most users, there is no immediate need to upgrade to a Copilot Plus PC.

For those who frequently work offline, handle sensitive data, or want the most seamless AI integration with low latency, Copilot Plus is the superior choice. The local processing enables features like Recall that are genuinely transformative for personal computing. Power users and professionals who rely on AI for creative tasks (image generation, note summarization) will benefit from the NPU acceleration.

As the AI PC market matures, more applications will leverage the NPU for tasks beyond Microsoft’s own features. Adobe, Zoom, and other software vendors are already developing NPU-accelerated plugins. Choosing a Copilot Plus PC ensures you are ready for the next wave of AI-enhanced applications.

Ultimately, the decision hinges on your hardware budget and specific needs. Standard Copilot is universal and free; Copilot Plus is premium and hardware-bound. Both are evolving rapidly, and Microsoft plans to converge them over time as NPUs become standard in all PCs. Until then, understanding the differences helps you make an informed purchase.
