Iran threatens ‘Stargate’ AI data centers

Iran has issued a stern warning regarding potential attacks on AI data centers situated across the Middle East, in direct response to ongoing threats and air strikes from the United States. In a video released by Iranian military spokesperson Ebrahim Zolfaghari, Iran's military made it clear that should the U.S. follow through with its threats to target Iran's civilian infrastructure, the country would retaliate with strikes against U.S. energy and technology installations in the region.

The video prominently featured an image of a globe that zoomed in on the Stargate data center located in the United Arab Emirates, accompanied by a message stating, "nothing stays hidden to our sight, though hidden by Google." This statement underscores Iran's assertion of its capability to monitor and respond to perceived threats.

Stargate represents a significant $500 billion joint venture involving OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, aimed at establishing AI data centers globally, which was announced in January 2025. Initially, this ambitious initiative faced challenges related to funding and the costs associated with tariffs, which hindered its launch and expansion plans.

The current threats from Iran come in the wake of U.S. President Trump’s ultimatum, which stated that if Iran did not reopen the crucial Strait of Hormuz by the end of Tuesday, the U.S. would strike Iranian civilian infrastructure, including power plants and water desalination facilities. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global shipping channel that has significantly impacted international supply chains since the commencement of hostilities in February.

As tensions escalate, several data centers in the region have already suffered attacks, with Iranian missiles reportedly striking Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers in Bahrain, as well as an Oracle data center in Dubai. Iran has also issued direct threats against prominent tech companies, including Nvidia and Apple, further heightening the stakes in this ongoing conflict.

This situation reflects a broader pattern of military escalation in the region, with the potential for significant impacts on global technology infrastructure and supply chains. As the conflict continues to unfold, the international community watches closely, particularly regarding the implications for AI technology and data management in a landscape fraught with geopolitical tension.

The Stargate initiative, with its vast investment in AI technology, highlights the intersection of modern technology and traditional military strategies, where data centers have become potential targets in the ongoing geopolitical struggle. The future of such technology investments lies in a precarious balance, as nations navigate the challenges posed by threats of military engagement and cyber warfare.
