Instead, Apple is focusing its resources on accelerating the development of the M7 chip, which is expected to arrive sooner than originally planned. The only chip from the M6 family that will see the light of day is the base M6.

This decision marks a break from Apple's traditional pattern, where each M-series generation typically includes a full lineup of processors, from the base chip to the Ultra tier. By skipping multiple M6 variants, Apple is signaling that the M7 generation is more important to its long-term strategy, particularly when it comes to on-device artificial intelligence.

What this means for MacBook Pro this fall

Later this year, Apple is expected to release redesigned MacBook Pro models. Those laptops will come equipped with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, not the M6 Pro or M6 Max that some had anticipated. This is a notable shift, as it means the high-end MacBook Pro lineup will remain on the M5 generation for a while longer while Apple prepares the M7 architecture.

Interestingly, the same fall launch will reportedly include a base model MacBook Pro that retains the older design. That device will be powered by the base M6 chip. This mixed-generation approach is unusual for Apple, but it reflects the company's desire to introduce the M6 chip only in its most accessible form, while saving the more advanced M6 variants for a generation that may never come.

Why Apple is prioritizing M7

The main reason for skipping the M6 Pro, M6 Max, and M6 Ultra is to accelerate development on the M7 chip. According to reporting from Bloomberg, the M7 family is expected to bring major improvements to Apple's neural processing capabilities. These upgrades are considered significant enough that Apple is willing to disrupt its usual release cadence to get M7 to market faster.

The M7 chip is reportedly scheduled to debut as soon as spring 2027, which is earlier than the typical fall 2027 window for a new flagship processor. This accelerated timeline suggests that Apple is eager to close the gap with dedicated AI accelerators from companies like Nvidia. The M7 Ultra, in particular, is said to dramatically upgrade AI performance, bringing it closer to the class of dedicated AI accelerators such as Nvidia's Blackwell architecture.

Apple has long held an advantage in running on-device AI models, largely because of its unified memory architecture. This design allows the CPU, GPU, and neural engine to share the same memory pool, meaning that Macs can allocate far more memory to AI tasks than traditional systems with separate VRAM. That additional memory capacity has given Apple an edge for running large language models and other on-device AI workloads.

With the M7 generation, Apple appears to want to strengthen that advantage further by significantly bolstering its neural engine. The M7 family will reportedly include major neural-processing upgrades, potentially making future Macs much more capable for AI tasks without needing to rely on cloud computing.

A possible shift in neural engine design

Historically, Apple has included the same size neural engine across its entire chip lineup, with the exception of the Ultra chip. For example, the M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max all feature a 16-core neural engine. This approach has simplified software development, as developers could rely on consistent neural processing capabilities across different Mac models.

That uniformity may change with the M7 lineup. While not confirmed, reports suggest that Apple could scale the neural engine based on chip size. That would mean the M7 Pro and M7 Max would have larger, more powerful neural engines than the base M7, and the M7 Ultra could have an even bigger neural engine. Such a design would give higher-end Macs a significant boost in AI performance, making them more suitable for demanding AI workflows.

This would also represent a philosophical shift for Apple, which has generally aimed to provide a consistent feature set across its processor family. By differentiating neural engine core counts, Apple would be creating a clearer performance hierarchy between its chips. For users, that could mean better AI performance on the Macs that need it most, while the base models remain more affordable.

What to expect from the M7 Mac lineup

The first Mac with an M7 chip is expected to be a redesigned base model 14-inch MacBook Pro, arriving in early 2027. That launch would mark the start of the M7 generation. Following that, Apple is expected to release M7 Pro and M7 Max versions of the high-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models later in the year.

The M7 Ultra chip is also rumored to support up to 1.5TB of RAM. That would match a feat achieved by the 2019 Mac Pro, which was Apple's most powerful desktop machine at the time. Support for such a large amount of memory would make the M7 Ultra especially well suited for AI research, 3D rendering, and other memory-intensive tasks.

All in all, it is sounding like the M7 lineup might be another significant upgrade across the board. By focusing on AI performance and memory capacity, Apple appears to be positioning its next-generation chips to compete more directly with high-end dedicated AI hardware. Macs may become even more attractive for developers, researchers, and professionals who rely on local AI processing.

The decision to skip M6 Pro, M6 Max, and M6 Ultra is not without risk. It means that MacBook Pro owners on older machines may need to wait longer for a high-end upgrade. But for Apple, the long-term benefits of arriving sooner to a powerful M7 generation could outweigh the short-term inconvenience. With AI becoming a central focus across the entire tech industry, Apple's accelerated M7 timeline may prove to be the right strategy.
