Design and Materials

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 measures 49mm by 44mm by 12mm and weighs 61.6 grams. It is the largest Apple Watch Apple sells, and it has a flatter, more rugged silhouette than the aluminum or titanium Series 11 models. The case is made from aerospace-grade titanium, which Apple says is lightweight, durable, and corrosion resistant. The Natural Titanium finish has a satin texture, while the Black Titanium version uses a custom blasting process that applies a diamond-like carbon coating to improve scratch resistance.

Apple also says the titanium case is 3D printed with aerospace-grade titanium powder. The printer creates the case layer by layer, using less material than traditional forging. The flat sapphire front crystal is more scratch resistant than the Ion-X glass used on lower-end watches, and the raised edges of the case help protect the display from impacts.

The Digital Crown has larger, deeper grooves so it can be used while wearing gloves, and it sits in a raised pill-shaped housing along with the side button. On the left side, the Action button is colored international orange so it is easy to spot in low light or under water. The Action button can be programmed to launch workouts, mark segments, set Compass Waypoints, start the Depth app, turn on the siren, and more.

Display and Always-On Panel

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 uses a new LTPO3 wide-angle OLED display. The bezels are 24 percent thinner than the Ultra 2, giving the watch a 1,245 sq mm active display area. That is larger than the 46mm Apple Watch Series 11, which has a 1,220 sq mm display. The resolution is 422 by 512 pixels.

Maximum brightness remains 3,000 nits, but the panel is designed to hold that brightness at a wider viewing angle. Minimum brightness drops to 1 nit for dark environments, and the lower refresh rate in always-on mode makes it possible to show a ticking seconds hand without raising the wrist.

S10 Chip and Gesture Control

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is powered by the same S10 chip found in the Apple Watch Series 11. It has a 64-bit dual-core processor with 5.6 billion transistors and a four-core Neural Engine. Apple does not claim any performance improvement over the S9 chip in the Ultra 2; the main benefit is that it supports the newer gesture controls introduced in watchOS 26.

Double Tap allows users to tap their index finger and thumb together to answer a call, play or pause music, stop a timer, snooze an alarm, open the Smart Stack, and interact with third-party apps. The newer Wrist Flick gesture lets users dismiss notifications or decline calls by quickly flicking the wrist. Storage remains at 64GB.

Battery Life and Charging

Battery life is one of the key reasons to buy the Apple Watch Ultra 3. It lasts up to 42 hours on a single charge with typical use, which is six hours longer than the Ultra 2. In Low Power Mode, the watch can run for up to 72 hours for multi-day adventures. Apple says a 15-minute charge provides up to 12 hours of normal use, and a five-minute charge delivers up to eight hours of sleep tracking. Fast charging takes the watch from zero to 80 percent in 45 minutes.

Health and Fitness Features

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 includes the same broad health suite as the Apple Watch Series 11. It has a third-generation optical heart rate sensor, an electrical heart rate sensor for ECG, a blood oxygen sensor, an accelerometer, and a gyroscope. The watch can monitor high and low heart rate, irregular heart rhythm, and atrial fibrillation.

Hypertension Alerts

In watchOS 26, the Ultra 3 can detect possible hypertension using heart rate data collected over a 30-day period. It analyzes how a user's blood vessels respond to each heartbeat and sends a notification if patterns suggest high blood pressure. The user can then log seven days of blood pressure readings from a cuff for more context before speaking with a doctor.

Blood Oxygen and ECG

Blood oxygen monitoring uses green, red, and infrared LEDs to measure the color of blood and estimate oxygen saturation between 70 and 100 percent. In the United States, readings are recorded on the wrist but evaluated on the iPhone due to an ongoing patent dispute and import ban. The ECG app works through the Digital Crown and the back sensor to detect normal sinus rhythm or signs of atrial fibrillation.

Sleep Apnea Detection and Sleep Score

The accelerometer can detect small movements at the wrist associated with breathing interruptions, helping identify possible sleep apnea. After 30 days of sleep data, the watch can flag signs of sleep apnea and display the details in the Health app. Sleep tracking monitors awake, REM, Core, and Deep sleep, and watchOS 26 adds a Sleep Score that considers bedtime, consistency, waking episodes, and sleep stages.

Temperature Sensing and Safety

Two temperature sensors measure body temperature at the wrist and ambient temperature in the air. The sensors can be used for retrospective ovulation estimates and improved period predictions. Crash Detection and Fall Detection use motion sensors to call emergency services if the wearer is unresponsive after a severe car crash or hard fall.

Outdoor and Adventure Features

The Ultra 3 is built for exploration. It has an 86-decibel siren with two alternating patterns, including an SOS pattern, that can be heard up to 600 feet away. The siren can be activated by holding the Action button or side button.

The Depth app works with the built-in depth gauge to show current depth, water temperature, underwater duration, and maximum depth. The watch is water resistant to 100 meters and certified to EN13319, an international standard for diving accessories. Through a partnership with Huish Outdoors, the Oceanic+ app can turn the watch into a dive computer with no-decompression limits, ascent rate, and safety stop guidance.

The Compass app includes Waypoints and Backtrack. Waypoints mark points of interest and update in real time as the wearer moves. Backtrack uses GPS to record a path so users can retrace their steps if lost. The Tides app provides high and low tide times, water height, and sunrise and sunset data.

Connectivity and Satellite Features

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the first Apple Watch with 5G support. It also includes satellite connectivity, allowing users to send Emergency SOS messages, text friends and family, and share Find My location when Wi-Fi and cellular are unavailable. Emergency SOS via satellite works without a cellular plan; satellite messages and Find My updates require an active cellular plan and are currently free.

The watch includes a W3 wireless chip and a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. UWB enables Precision Finding for a misplaced iPhone, Car Keys support, AirTag tracking, and HomePod integration. GPS uses dual-frequency L1 and L5 for more accurate distance, pace, and route data, especially in urban environments with tall buildings or heavy tree cover.

Buying Advice and Comparison

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 starts at $799 and is available in Natural Titanium or Black Titanium with a variety of bands, including the Trail Loop, Alpine Loop, Ocean Band, and Milanese Loop. Because it was refreshed in September 2025, now is a reasonable time to buy; the next update is not expected until September 2026, and it may bring only minor changes.

The Ultra 3 is best for people who need a larger screen, longer battery life, satellite connectivity, a siren, and a case that can handle extreme conditions. Those who do not need those features may prefer the Apple Watch Series 11, which starts at $399, or the Apple Watch SE 3, which starts at $249. The Series 11 offers many of the same health sensors in a lighter and smaller design, while the SE 3 lacks ECG, blood oxygen, and the always-on display.

What's Next

Apple is already working on the Apple Watch Ultra 4. The next model is expected to gain a faster S12 chip and possible health and fitness improvements, but major design changes are not likely until at least 2028. Rumors also point to a future Apple Watch with noninvasive blood glucose monitoring, an LG Display high-mobility oxide panel in 2027, and possible Touch ID support. None of those features are confirmed, and some are several years away.
