The promise of artificial intelligence in education is straightforward: give every student a tireless tutor that can explain algebra, suggest edits for essays, and help debug code. Yet a growing body of research suggests that when the AI assistant disappears, much of the apparent progress disappears with it. New York City’s recent decision to pause student-facing generative AI in its youngest classrooms has reignited a difficult question: Are schools preparing children for an AI-driven future, or are they letting technology undermine the very skills education is supposed to build?

New York City’s ban, one of the toughest in the country, applies to public elementary and middle-school students through the eighth grade. It calls for a one-year pause on “student-facing generative AI,” a period during which schools must evaluate how AI is being used and whether it truly serves students. Some parents had hoped for a two-year pause, making the single-year timeline a source of disappointment. More concerning, the ban includes loopholes: “centrally approved” e-books and coding programs are exempt, meaning some AI-backed tools may still reach younger students under different labels.

The scale of AI adoption in schools makes the policy debate feel urgent. According to a 2026 Pew Research Center survey, 54 percent of students said they used AI to help with schoolwork, and 12 percent said they used it for all their assignments. A 2025 report from the Center for Democracy and Technology estimated that 85 percent of teachers and 86 percent of students used AI during the 2024-25 school year. Those numbers suggest AI has already become a normal presence in classrooms, even where formal policies are unclear or contradictory.

Does this widespread use lead to better learning? A Stanford University study found that K-12 students frequently performed better on math, writing, and coding tasks when using AI tools. On the surface, that seems like good news. But the study also found that when the chatbots were removed, those improvements tended to evaporate. Some students, especially those who used general-purpose chatbots rather than tools specifically designed for learning, became more dependent on AI rather than more capable without it. The immediate aid can mask fragile understanding, giving teachers and parents a false sense of progress.

A separate report from the Brookings Institution reached a similar conclusion. Well-designed AI tools, used within an overall, pedagogically sound approach, can be a genuine benefit in the classroom. But an overreliance on AI chatbots can harm a student’s ability to learn independently. It can also weaken relationships with teachers and classmates, as students outsource not just answers but also the collaborative struggle that is often central to deep learning.

The debate over AI in classrooms is the latest chapter in a long history of technological anxiety in education. When calculators became widespread, educators worried that students would never learn basic arithmetic. When Wikipedia arrived, critics warned that research skills would collapse. Each wave of technology has changed how students work, but generative AI is different because it does not merely aid a task; it can complete the task entirely. A student struggling with an essay can ask a chatbot to produce a polished draft in seconds. A student stuck on a coding assignment can receive a working solution without understanding the logic behind it. That makes the risk less about misspent study time and more about bypassing learning altogether.

There are, of course, beneficial uses of AI in schools. Adaptive tutoring systems can provide immediate feedback tailored to a student’s pace. AI can assist students with disabilities by reading text aloud, translating lessons, or helping structure thoughts. Teachers can use AI to create differentiated materials, draft lesson plans, or generate new practice problems. The central challenge is not whether AI has a place in education; it is how to use it without making it a crutch.

Part of the solution may be AI literacy. Students need to understand what these tools are, how they produce text, and when to use them suspiciously. Teachers need guidance on assignments that encourage process over product, such as drafting in class, explaining reasoning, or using AI as a Socratic partner rather than an answer generator. The NYC ban may create breathing room for that kind of discussion.

For parents, this tension is immediate and personal. Consider a parent whose daughter recently entered a public high school in Manhattan, where AI is still allowed in the classroom. She has been studying Scratch coding, and that kind of computational thinking is valuable. But while working with computers has its benefits, the deeper goal should be to learn how to learn. That means making mistakes, sitting with confusion, asking a human question, trying another approach. If AI quietly removes the struggle from learning, it may remove the mastery as well.

New York’s pushback, even if imperfect, is a welcome step. It recognizes that the burden of proof should be on the technology companies and the schools that adopt their products, not on students who are still developing the cognitive foundations they will need for the rest of their lives. A one-year pause is not a permanent rejection of AI; it is an invitation to study the issue more carefully before shaping a generation of learners around tools that are still poorly understood.

The deeper worry is whether schools have already passed the point of no return. Students and teachers have woven AI into daily routines, and old habits are hard to break. District policies can ban a category of tools, but they cannot ban the cultural shift that AI has already created. Even if every school in America banned AI chatbots tomorrow, many students would still open one at home. The conversation, therefore, cannot be only about prohibition. It must also be about what good learning should look like in an age of abundance, where answers are easy and understanding is hard.

For now, the evidence paints an honest picture: AI can help kids do better in school on a given day, in a given task, under a given set of conditions. The open question is whether they are truly learning or simply getting help. The answer will determine not only how children are graded, but whether they are prepared to think for themselves when the AI is not there to help.
